Modern English Usage

On the way back from teaching class today, I passed two women students in the hallway, one of whom was saying to the other, “I was in the same situation. But I manned up.”

Do women man up? I was interested to learn that they do.

I read your challenge to individuals making an attempt to say that there is no legal precedence that specifically states that you have to pay taxes on your income, and as I was reading through the IRS codes and found what you had said regarding individuals very informative. As I was reading through though i found that for married couples this is what it states:
a) Married individuals filing joint returns and surviving spouses
There is hereby imposed on the taxable income of -
(1) every married individual (as defined in section 7703) who makes a single return jointly with his spouse under section 6013, and
(2) every surviving spouse (as defined in section 2(a)), a tax determined in accordance with the following table:

I'm not including the table because it doesn't really matter. However with regard to married couples, it states that "every married individual (as defined in section 7703) who makes a single return jointly with his spouse". That desigination is specifying "who makes a single return jointly with his spouse" does not state specifically when or if they can be assessed tax if they never actually file a return.
Of course we are speaking literally by the letter of what is said, not practically as people view it.
